Samarinda

Samarinda

June 1991-July 1991

After Simon Dew left Melandra in May 1991, he teamed up with Rob Hall to form the jazz-folk duo Samarinda, named after a town in Indonesia. The duo were formed as a temporary project for street performances, but when this proved commercially unsuccessful they concentrated on recording their experimental jazz/funk arrangements of folk tunes. They played one gig in the Flea & Firkin, Manchester, then disbanded.

Rob went to the U.S.A. to study jazz at the Boston College of Music, then returned to Europe. He has since formed and toured with several bands, including Profusion and his Cross Currents Quartet. Simon went on to join Whiskey Breakfast later that year.
